Introduction to Access Gateway
Pointsharp Access Gateway is a reverse proxy that enables organizations to publish their applications to their external users in a secure manner. It integrates into Microsoft IIS where it filters and routes traffic, according to the configured policy.
By integrating with a Pointsharp Server, the Access Gateway can provide a plethora of authentication options ranging from traditional password authentication, to contextual authentication, including multiple factors. Furthermore, the Pointsharp Access Gateway is specialized in handling Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Skype for business.
A basic ActiveSync device access procedure
-
The customer device sends a sync-request to Access Gateway (AG).
-
AG checks the identity of the user towards the ID Server (PSID): An Authentication.
-
PSID also checks the identity towards the Directory.
-
After the device has been authenticated, the device’s rules (defined in PSID) are checked: An Authorization.
-
These steps have their own modules in the Access Gateway Admin GUI:
- modAuth
-
Authentication
- modEASv2
-
Authorization
These modules, along with other modules, can perform their own checks within Access Gateway, but the authentication and authorization are always done by the ID Server.
The ID Server verifies that all looks OK before anything is passed on to the Exchange Server. If not OK, the device will either become Blocked or Quarantined.
