Portal component overview

The Portal component of the Net iD Portal package is a web-service–based life-cycle management application. It simplifies the management of tokens, for example, smart cards and other key tokens, as well as users, devices, and certificates within an organization.

The portal makes it possible to manage tokens for different end entities, for example, users and servers. This includes issuing and revoking tokens. It also manages the entire chain between users, tokens, keys, and certificates.

The portal connects the certificate service and the database service in the organization’s infrastructure.

Administrators, officers, and end-users can access the GUI of the web service. Each user can use the features they have been granted permission to use.

For example, an officer can use the Officer GUI to manage smart cards and certificates for end-users. This includes actions for logon authentication to the organization’s network and applications. It also includes actions for signing or encrypting documents.

The architecture of the portal consists of a web-service API and, typically, a separate GUI. The GUI communicates with the API. Together, they form a web portal that users can access through a web browser.
